ONLINE SAFETY 
To ensure student safety, Katy ISD screens online activity whenever students are logged into District accounts, whether utilizing a District-issued Chromebook or personal device. Katy ISD has recently switched its online screening filter from Content Keeper to GoGuardian Beacon services as part of our school’s broader district device screening process.

STUDENT USE OF PERSONAL DEVICES  
Katy ISD’s Personal Communication Devices guidelines  

New Texas state law (House Bill 1481) requires all public school districts to restrict student use of personal communication devices during the instructional day. These devices include cell phones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds and similar technology. Effective immediately, all personal communication devices must remain turned off and out of sight from the first bell to dismissal.  

While students may still bring personal communication devices to campus, use during the instructional day is strictly prohibited. Any device that is visible or in use during instructional hours will be considered a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and may result in disciplinary action.  

If your child has a documented health or learning need that requires access to a personal communication device, please contact your campus administration to discuss appropriate accommodations. Exceptions will only be made for emergency situations or students with verified support needs as part of an approved learning or medical plan.

TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE 
Students and parents who need assistance with their Chromebook should check out the Family Technology Resources & Support Website. There are many resources available to support parents and students Katy 1 Source.  Click on Katy 1 Source after logging into MyKaty.

CHROMEBOOK DEVICE INSURANCE 
Parents can opt-in for accidental insurance for the Chromebook and must select this option during Annual Student Update or New Student Enrollment. The insurance must be paid within 30 days after the student’s first day of attendance and will not cover intentional damage. Insurance fee(s) will be paid in the District’s Pay ‘N Go application and insurance coverage will not begin until payment is received. Failure to pay within 30 days after the first day of attendance will result in your student’s device not being covered for the entire school year. Once insurance is selected and your record has been approved, you will receive an email with instructions on how to pay for the fee in Pay ‘N Go.  

Insurance is valid until the last day of the summer 2026 or until it is depleted. Insurance must be selected and paid yearly. 

If you did not select insurance and would like to add it, you have 30 days after your student’s first day of attendance to add it and complete payment. You can send an email to changemyrequest@katyisd.org and provide the following information:

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP 
Digital citizenship is the responsible use of technology and the Internet. Lessons are taught about specific topics such as respectful communication when online, balanced and healthy use of technology, cyberbullying awareness, online privacy, and analyzing different forms of media for accuracy. Digital citizenship will continue to be taught throughout the school year. We appreciate parents' support, and additional resources can be found on Katy ISD’s website.

MEALS CHARGE POLICY     
District charge policy allows students without meal money to receive the menu meal choice for a limited time with the expectation the parent will reimburse all meals charged.    

Parents will be alerted when their child charges for a meal by receiving a courtesy call and/or email through the district automated call out system, if the district parent information is correct and up to date. Parents are responsible for monitoring the amount of money in their child’s account and paying back any borrowed money in a timely manner. If a student owes money on his/her account, he/she will be allowed to purchase snacks and/or a la carte only with cash in hand for that purchase, or once the student’s negative account is paid in full and funds are available to cover additional purchases.

HEALTH-RELATED SERVICES AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS 
This notice is in accordance with Texas Senate Bill 12 (SB 12) which requires school districts to inform parents/guardians before the first day of school about all health-related services that may be available to students on their assigned campus. This notice was initially posted on August 8, 2025. 

Katy ISD Health-Related Services Available: 

• Nursing services (first aid, medication administration, chronic disease management) 
• Emergency services (use of AED and other lifesaving equipment and medications) 
• Health Screenings: Vision, Hearing, Scoliosis, Acanthosis Nigricans (as required at state mandated grade levels or as needed to ensure optimal learning) 
• Health and wellness education 
• School counseling services (academic, career, personal/social) 
• Social work services 
• Crisis response and trauma-informed care 
• Referrals to community-based health providers (upon request) 

Additional Health-Related Services Available as Needed (Parental Consent Required): 

• Psychological services (available based on a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) 
• Small group counseling (availability and topics vary by campus)

Your Rights as a Parent: 
You have the right to decline or withhold consent for any health-related service provided by the District. If you prefer that your child not participate in any of the services listed above, please contact your campus nurse, school counselor or administrator to submit a written notice. Please be advised that if you choose to opt out of these services, the campus nurse or designated staff will not be permitted to assess or provide care unless the situation involves a life-threatening emergency, a student welfare concern or a crisis situation requiring immediate intervention, as defined by applicable law and district policy.

KATY ISD HEALTH SERVICES: IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION 
State law requires students in Texas schools to be immunized against certain vaccine preventable diseases or submit required documentation for an exemption.  Checkout immunization requirements and information on the Katy ISD Health Services webpage.

Information below, provided by the Katy ISD Health Services Department, offering an opportunity for students needing to receive the necessary vaccines for school entry.

FOOD ALLERGY 

• In accordance with State guidelines, Senate Bill 27, and the Texas Education Code, Section 38.209, a food allergy management plan has been developed and implemented by the District that includes general procedures to limit the risk posed to students with food allergies, and specific procedures to address the care of students with a food allergy who are at risk for anaphylaxis. 
• Each school campus will be supplied with the required amount of epinephrine auto injectors for pediatric and adult dosages, approved by an advising physician, to be used for cases of suspected anaphylaxis. 
• Katy ISD will ensure that a sufficient number of school personnel at each campus are trained to administer epinephrine. Currently, this program is being funded by an outside source and if this funding source were to cease, the implementation of stock epinephrine auto-injectors will be re-evaluated by Katy ISD. 
•  Parents of a student with known, life-threatening anaphylaxis should provide the school with all necessary medications for implementing student specific orders on an annual basis. This guideline is not intended to replace student specific orders or parent-provided individual medication.

STUDENT IDENTIFICATION (ID) BADGES   
REMINDER: Every student ID badge includes a unique student ID number that is used to check out library books and textbooks, to purchase food items in the cafeteria, to permit passage to certain club meetings, and to provide easy identification of students in common areas of the school. Students must wear their ID badges at all times during school hours, while on school property. If a student loses the ID, a replacement must be obtained promptly from the designated school office/location. Failure to follow these procedures may be considered a violation of the Discipline Management Plan and Student Code of Conduct. STUDENT ID INFORMATION     
If you are looking for your student’s Katy ID, their ID and other pertinent information can be found on the student’s ID badge. It is located under the bar code and begins with an alpha character. Additionally, the Katy ID can also be found by logging into Home Access Center (HAC). Click on the Registration icon – Demographic Tab and locate the field called Student ID.

ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG) SERVICES 
Katy ISD will offer Electrocardiogram or (ECG) services with our physicals. This is volunteer and not required to participate in UIL Activities. The cost will be $20 for the ECG and $30 for the Physical. These are separate charges. Below are some FAQ’s. OCTOBER IS NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION MONTH 
October is recognized as National Fire Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of fire safety. It’s a reminder for families and communities to review fire escape plans, check smoke alarms, and practice safe habits. By taking simple precautions, we can help prevent fires and protect lives.

OCTOBER IS PEDESTRIAN AWARENESS MONTH 
October is also Pedestrian Safety Awareness Month, and our district is dedicated to keeping students safe on their way to and from school. This month highlights the importance of using crosswalks, staying alert near traffic, and following safety rules. PROHIBITED ITEMS & CONSEQUENCES   
Students who unintentionally bring to school a prohibited item, which is not illegal, may turn in the item to a staff member without disciplinary consequences if this is done before the item is discovered or reported by a staff member or another student. This option applies only to the first time the prohibited item is accidentally brought to school. The second time the prohibited item is brought to school, the item will be confiscated, and the student disciplined according to the type of item brought to school. Parents/ guardians may pick up confiscated items which are not illegal within two school days. Items not picked up within two school days will be discarded. Illegal items and items designated as evidence will be turned over to the Katy ISD police.   

Students shall not possess or use:   

• Fireworks of any kind, smoke or stink bombs, or any other pyrotechnic device   
• A razor, box cutter, chain or any other object used in a way that threatens or inflicts bodily injury to another person   
• A gun of any kind   
• A toy gun/“look-alike” weapon   
• An air gun or BB gun   
• Ammunition of any kind   
• A stun gun   
• Mace or pepper spray   
• Pornographic material or items   
• Tobacco products, cigarettes, e-cigarettes and any component, part or accessory for an e-cigarette device or accessory to vaping   
• Devices designed to emit an electrical shock (such as a TASER)

SAFE FIREARM STORAGE RESOURCES    
House Bill 3, (88th Texas Legislature) requires the Texas School Safety Center, in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), to provide school districts information and other resources regarding the safe storage of firearms, including information on section 46.13 of the Texas Penal Code, for distribution to parents/guardians and community.     

The Texas DPS has created a public relations campaign – Keep ’Em Safe Texas – that offers free downloadable resources to promote safe gun storage. Below you will find links to resources in English and Spanish.

SAFE GUN STORAGE: Texas Penal Code 46.13 
In accordance with Sec. 37.222 of the Texas Education Code, school districts are required to provide parents and guardians with information regarding the proper storage of firearms. It is illegal to store, transport, or leave an unsecured firearm in a location where children are likely to have access to it. A person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence: 

• Failed to secure the firearm; or 
• Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access 

The penalty for allowing a child to gain access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4,000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two). 

It is important to store guns unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored separately to prevent suicide, unintentional shootings and other tragedies.

SPEAKUP ANONYMOUS REPORTING APP 

SpeakUP is the anonymous reporting platform that students, parents, and patrons can use to report safety concerns, bullying, threats of violence, drug use, as well as any other concerns related to student physical or mental health. SpeakUP is available for download in the Apple Store or Google Play. It is also available on all District websites, computers and District devices. SpeakUP provides an opportunity for the Katy ISD community to anonymously provide valuable information to District administration and law enforcement that will help keep our students safe.

#KatyISDSafety: CAMPUS EXTERIOR DOORS SAFETY SIGNAGE 

All campuses exterior doors have safety signage indicating that exterior doors must remain closed and locked. The purpose of the signage is to reinforce and remind all staff and students to take the extra precaution of ensuring that doors are closed and locked at all times, and to not open a door for anyone trying to enter. All campus exterior doors already have signage directing all visitors to utilize the main entrance for access to campuses and not side entrances.  These stickers should be left in place, with the new yellow sticker above placed inside over this sticker, allowing the external message to remain outward.  All staff and students should avoid allowing anyone without a district identification badge from “tailgating” or following them into a district facility.

Child Find is a process designed to identify, locate, and evaluate individuals from birth to 21 years of age who may need special education and related services. NATIONAL CHILD IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM    
During the last legislative session, Senate Bill 2158 was passed, which requires the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to provide parents with an inkless, in-home child fingerprint and DNA identification card for children in grades K-8.  If ever needed, parents may submit this kit to federal, state, tribal, or local law enforcement to help locate and return a missing or trafficked child. On behalf of the State of Texas, Katy ISD has distributed these in-home child identification kits to junior high and elementary campuses. Please understand that there is no obligation to use the kit, but if you choose, this will allow you to have a set of fingerprints and DNA for your child that you can keep at home and turn over to law enforcement in case of an emergency. Please do not return the kits (used or unused) to your child’s school.
